oh that’s bizarre. I literally just commented the same thing on someone’s post to me before I saw this. Absolutely agree.

I’m not talking about being outraged about the store. Of course they need somewhere to shop. I’m talking about the reaction of all the Jezebelians who support clothing meant to oppress women when it’s a hypocritical thought process. Read the comments on a Duggar story about how they treat women. It’s a double…
In fact, you can find many examples of Jezebel commenters condemning the Duggars, etc. for how they expect their female family members to dress. Do I smell the aroma of hypocrisy?
I have. The reasons? “oh I don’t feel safe not wearing it, men won’t respect me if I don’t wear it”. Isn’t that marvelous? Besides I don’t give a single shit what alienated women think about wearing the clothing. Women are often their own worst enemies and can be as sexist and misgynistic as men.
If this was a story about a conservative mormon or christian outfit the comments would be very different. I don’t support any religion that oppresses women but it’s simply true. It’s so Jezebel.
Can we please stop pretending that Saudi Arabia is not a truly horrible place to live, with many restrictions and incredibly harsh punishment? Please? Because no matter how brainwashed the higher class or ex-pats may be, the fact remains that for lower class women it is absolutely abhorrent.
Insightful article to share! I had read it before and it’s good that you’ve shared here as well.
Nothing says religious modesty more than covering your hair with a 500 buck scarf and putting layers of paint on your face.
I get the overall point of western oppression by way of sexualizing women and calling it empowerment, but it’s just not the same thing as oppression via religious modesty. No woman is forced to wear miniskirts, and nobody faces potentially punitive measures or public disapproval or shame if they refuse to wear a…
Combining the worst elements of religious orthodoxy with consumer capitalism? Oh yay!
Like that’s ever going to happen. Right. Muslims can keep their oppression clothes, thank you
This is Jezebel, it’s not surprising.
Jesus christ. Do you listen to yourself?
Let’s not celebrate the oppression of women, their sexuality, and their freedom via “modesty” laws - in Islam, in orthodox Judaism, in Mormonism, in crazy Christian sects. Anywhere. Someday, I hope the women wearing these symbols of oppression will be free of their confines, whether self-imposed or not.
I'm not sure why everyone is so pumped about this...hijab is a mechanism for the oppression of women.
Nothing feels sexier than being allowed to leave the domecile!
Deserve to be acknowledged...as long as they follow sexist religious dress codes.
I can’t wait for these to get to my hometown in Saudi Arabia! Finally, something to wear when I hit up the night clu—hmm—ah, something fashionable I can put on when I start classes at colleg—well—okay, something I can wear while I drive to—errr—fine, something nice to wear while I just walk around in publi—oh.
I’m pretty sure a lot of Muslim women find this kind of bourgeois capitulation a little disturbing.
Yaaaay, just in time for the coming Global Caliphate!
