As the biggest Val Kilmer fan in the world, I’m extremely excited to see and learn some new stuff about my favorite actor while he’s still around. He’s shared little clips from his filming of himself and I hope it’s illuminating for one of the weirder (and generally harmless) characters in Hollywood in his generation.

I just finished “The Sympathizer” after hearing Park Chan-Wook is teaming with A24 to turn it into a miniseries. A really interesting sorta-spy thriller that’s really about representation of peoples in entertainment and government in this case the Vietnamese people following the war. Excited to see what PCW does with

What if I told you it’s the Phantom Menace of the Coppola oeuvre?? (sorry, couldn’t resist)

You’re telling me you had a chance to write about how Twixt actually rules and is secretly a pretty cool entry in the Coppola canon and didn’t?? For shame, Jessie, for shame. (I’ve always wanted to see One From the Heart and the visuals you describe make me want to watch it more)

I hope this is so good that someone will take a shot on Descenders as a series, because that is one of my favorite series of all time. Though, that’s in part thanks to Nguyen’s stunning watercolor art, which I have no idea how you attempt to capture in a moving picture.

You’re right, it was a box office flop, but liked by critics, I got it mixed. But it did only manage to win 1 of those 9, interestingly.

I kinda thought Citizen Kane wasn’t loved at original release? It didn’t win Best Picture or anything... I was under the impression it took a little while for people to realize it was a work of genius.

I haven’t seen The Father, yet, but I suspect they would make an interesting double feature in taking different approaches to the horrible unreality of a failing mind. 

Unrelated, but last year’s “Relic” was my favorite horror movie of the year and has a truly beautiful, unsettling final scene/end.

One fun game I like to play on IMDB is to look at movies’ page and the metacritic score (way better than RT), and compare it to the IMDB user score. If it’s a female or POC lead film the score is often a full point lower than the critics, and if it’s a superhero, geekbro thing it’s almost always a full point higher.

Fincher has his famous quote about there only actually being two ways to shoot a scene, and one of them being wrong, and I always thought that must piss off Neils Arden Oplev because it inadvertently leads to being a pretty harsh criticism when you remake a movie/adapt the same source material as he did.

I thought it about equal. There are elements of each that I prefer to the other, but both are good IMO. They just take sort of a different tact, similar to Rapace vs. Mara. They both play Lisbeth in a way that makes sense from the source material, while being vastly different portrayals. 

She gave a lovely acceptance speech, as well. Real grace and empathy in both her films and her person.

Cool, thanks. I’m guessing Annihilation is different enough it won’t feel like a retread, especially given his writing style. I intend to give him another shot at some point.

This makes it sound like maybe the most accessible entry point in the JVM canon? I tried Dead Astronauts in audiobook form and was just completely lost and gave up. I loved the film “Annihilation” and like the idea of JVM, but can’t seem to get into him.

I LOVE this movie. It’s such an affecting, introspective, and disquieting representation of grief, regret, and depression made manifest. It would make a great double feature with “Annihilation” for meditative sci-fi that uses alien metaphor to plumb the depths of broken psyches.

This sounds brutal and amazing. Gonna have to steel myself and dive in. I haven’t watched IaNYN, but maybe this will spur me to jump into it next.
