She was also tremendous in Seberg and I thought kicked ass in Underwater. She was the best thing about Happiest Season, as well. She’s been very good for a long time.

It probably should’ve ended after S3 or 4 at the latest. The first 3 were about perfect, but it’s run into the problem of vertical character development. I quit S5 because everyone had all the same problems but more and louder. They could never figure out anywhere else for them to go and make the story work, and it…
Hammer isn’t without talent, but I often find myself asking, “Why cast Hammer when Chris Hemsworth is sitting right there?” I would’ve found Lone Ranger 10x better with Hemsworth’s charm and presence in place of Hammer’s grating style. (I still like a lot about LR, especially the climax)
I’m a big fan of the Caulipower pizzas, and find the crust basically indistinguishable from other frozen pizzas. It fits my diet, though it’s recently been supplanted by Quest’s protein, milk-based pizza crust which has less calories and tons more protein.
I’m so sad Val Kilmer can no longer speak and we won’t get Madmartigan back in full force.
I started playing Sonic Chronicles on DS. It’s the only Bioware game I’ve never played and my first ever handhold console game. It’s been pretty fun so far, though the repetitive turn based battles against respawning bugs are not my favorite. I’m enjoying the idea of a story based RPG set in the super weird…
Lenny and Larry’s Complete Poppy Seed Cookie is my very favorite cookie in the world. If you want some lemon poppy, check it out.
On the opposite side of the spectrum Fonda Lee writes some steamy ass sex scenes in Jade War, to the point I thought about having to pull the car over while listening to the audiobook.
This is some of my favorite type of storytelling that seems to be getting more play these days. The easy part of fixing society is overthrowing the shitty society, the hard part is actually instituting meaningful change. Hunger Games did a good job showing that just because you’re opposing the evil doesn’t make you…
I watched this on Prime a few months back. Fair to say I appreciated more about it than I liked, despite wanting to like more. The ending karaoke stuff was pretty jarring and I didn’t think it nailed the tonal shifts as deftly as described here, but I did appreciate the uniqueness and the way it went for its…
Well put. 100% agreed. I hope we get more movies like these going forward.
As someone who isn’t very into Marvel movies, this year was really nice. It was quieter and less just completely dominated by the cultural monolith of Disney/Marvel. I thought Birds of Prey was an utter delight. So much fun and so well made. I also loved Old Guard. It’s great the two best superhero movies of 2020 were…
Mint Chocolate Chip is my favorite thing, and ice cream is my go to. Not technically ice cream, but Talento’s Mint Chocolate Chip Gelato is out of this world good. So smooth. So good.
I made this last week for Turkey Day. It was so fucking good. I want to make this every year. The turkey was juicy and flavorful, the Bao had great consistency, and it made the best little sammies all put together. I’m by no means any kind of cook, but I did my best and despite misreading a few Tsp for Tbsp’s it came…
I’m about finished with Julie Kagawas’ The Shadow and the Fox #1. It’s pretty formulaic, but I like Eastern fantasy enough that I’m into it. I also read The Priory and the Orange Tree which is an epic fantasy standalone novel (rare), and really develops some surprising relationships between characters.
I watched Land of Silence and Darkness and found it to be one of the most existentially scary movies I’ve ever seen. Just fundamentally shook me.
I’m so glad you guys hit this and Encounters this week, my two fav Herzog docs. I love the opening shot of “mountains” that are actually just tire tracks. Herzog is such a motherfucker and it’s great. The hellscape of those burning oil fields is unforgettable.
I’m so glad this made the list for Herzog week. This is my favorite documentary. The beguiling underwater sequences, the fascinating characters, and the unforgettable penguin marching into the mountains. Just beautiful, evocative stuff.
Great writeup and a great movie. Every Frame A Painting did a great episode on the use of the profile shot of Mother to suggest mystery and withheld information through cinematography.
There’s an excellent play called “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity” by Kristoffer Diaz that deals a lot with POC wrestlers wrestling with the offensive stereotypes they are playing in the ring in a RAW era wrestling organization. I would’ve loved to see GLOW do something similar.
