The 2015 shoot down of the SU-24 always sounded funny to me. I think the pilot was ordered to violate Turkish airspace, draw fire and eject. The pilot was killed but, hey, WTF does Putin care? He still got what he wanted which was moving massive amounts of SAMs into the arena.

I agree this is not a full on attack against NATO but his goal is to fracture the alliance and chipping off Turkey would accomplish that nicely. I feel like this and the cyber warfare attacks during the election which put Trump in power are connected.

Maybe the cyber warfare operations during the elections were just the first step leading up to this. A presidential transition period is the perfect time for an attack.
