It looks like the center of the hood has a slight rise running the length. There’s probably a scoop behind the top part of the grill that takes in the air and runs it through that channel.

I have an Outback (08, back when it looked and felt like a proper wagon), and I took it to a remote OHV campground in Utah, one where the expect you to need/have a quad/UTV to get to the campsites.
