Because they’ve been walking away from those buyers for years and years, that’s the whole point. You’re saying it’ll correct itself, but it hasn’t yet, and there isn’t a good business case for it. When will there be? Or worse, will there ever be again?

Honda is as conservative of a car company as it gets, and they always have been. They’re not going to dedicate resources to a new platform until that market has been roven many times over. They don’t have an interest in beating anyone to any market whatsoever. Look at the first generation Passport. Or consider why…
I read that auto designers after 9/11 realized that people felt very insecure and wanted to feel like their cars made them feel safe, so they started raising shoulder lines on cars to basically make them into bunkers. Crash standards are a part of it, but designs that sell are designs that survive.
