While it’s definitely admirable to have a stunt coordinator looking out for their stuntworkers considering how many stuntpeople get injured or even killed on the job, I’d like to hear a more in-depth explanation of why he thought he was more capable of doing the stunt in drag than an actual woman.

Agreed, the intent was to minimize the severity, but (at least, I hope) such parties are a thing of the past. It sounds almost barbaric at this point, thanks to the advances of modern medicine, and yet...it’s what we did, and nobody blinked an eye at it, not that long ago.

Fully agreed. It creates a convenient fig leaf wherein we don’t have to examine how deeply sexist our society is and all the myriad ways it affects everyone’s lives, and lets people believe that what they do doesn’t need to be examined because “I couldn’t possibly be like that”.
