Open air fires dissipates (right word?) so much heat that it is very hard to melt any kind of metal in that way. Maybe compare it to a garden grill, they never melt even if iron/steel whatever melts at about 1500c and charcoal burns at up to 2700c. My best guess at an explanation anyway :)
