I think you can have Spider-Man rekindle his relationships with Ned and MJ without it being a return to Iron Spider. They can meet more naturally and we get to see the relationships from the beginning, but with him having to hide that he is Spider-Man.

I’m assuming you haven’t read much of the new canon, then? I would recommend the Aftermath trilogy, the Alphabet Squadron trilogy, both new Thrawn trilogies, Shadows of the Sith, Bloodlines, Master & Apprentice, and The High Republic. None of those feel like filler.
