They did, the issue at hand is that both, the SAE Combo, or CHAdeMO standards don't really go beyond about 50kw. Tesla started the supercharger network at 90kw, and then decided that was still TOO slow, and went to 120-130kw chargers. Of course the standards don't support this, and Tesla wants to do a lot of close…

It's a short term patch up, turbos and direct injection aren't cheap, but they're less expensive than hybrid systems. And they weigh less.
