Our fandom is in fact full of basement dwellers who view their video game achievements as something meaningful. And we make fun of them all the time for the exact reasons given by the news report. But the lack of looking into the kid’s actual life to see what it is like is a failure in reporting.

Games will still compete with each other because they’re not all owned by the same company. Sales and deals will still happen as a result.
