Good point, good point. But if you’re buying new and not very mechanically inclinded, buying with those features from the factory would be appealing. It’s not just the cost of the upgrades in the aftermarket, but paying someone else’s labor rate to install.

My idea was to have an LCD element over each digit, then make them opaque randomly and switch which ones were opaque every millisecond or so. It would look darker to the eye, but a camera could only pick up some subset of the digits depending on when exactly it flashed.
