Can you imagine the stones or stupidity it takes to take what Tesla says (5000 jobs in 9 months), and multiply that by 7 on a faster timeline (35000 jobs in less than 9 months)? Legitimately taking numbers from the poster company of over promising and under delivering, and then saying you can do worse.

In fairness to the builder of the car - when this thing was created WW2 surplus stuff was ridiculously common and picking up a boxed Merlin was probably about as expensive as the gas to get to the warehouse and back. It’s only outrageous now because of how many have been lost or destroyed since then.

While the end goal is primarily the manufacturing of vehicles, there are a LOT of jobs within an automaker that is not directly related to manufacturing at all - R&D of both hardware and software, IT, support, etc., most of which are going to be salaried but NOT management.

I suspect non-management but white-collar jobs, like engineering, marketing, dealer liaisons and such are all salaried.

I’m going to get shouted down, but this is just a company using performance management processes to get rid of low performers. 500 employees out of a population is 0.6%. Not newsworthy at all.

I’m wondering if these layoffs aren’t part of an effort to clean house and get rid of some of the old guard so they can bring in a new round of hires that specialize in electrification. 

I would think the shift towards EVs would require more (or at least different) employees, at least in the short/mid term.
