I think its a reference to one of her celebrity interviews in which she asked someone (maybe Jimmy Carter?), “If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?”

Some of the Popes in real life would dig up their predecessor’s corpse and put it on trial. Maybe Francis can do that for Joey’s covering up of the priest molestation scandal, not that Francis is 100% great on actively dealing with it either.

Selective breeding is a form of genetic modification. You just don’t know what genetic combination is being modified in order to get the result desired. You just go with the fact that the plant is still edible along with any other desired result.
