It’s fairly insinuated that she was a child soldier. With at least rudimentary training with a blaster from her father and mother.

She’s also not the ONLY one that can help the Rebels. She’s the only one that can make contact with Saw, because of familiarity. She’s one of the few people WILLING to help the Rebels and lead the operation.
