I think the newer ones are pretty good as long as you keep the filter clean and change it according to the schedule.

I agree with a lot of the other commenters, it depends on who does the work. I know one shop that pretty much specializes in rebuilt cars. They spend the time to take the car apart and put it back together and often it is as good as it was new (sometimes it even seems better).
