Not that I ever think “trans panic” is a justifiable defense but acknowledging that in reality it works, how the fuck could anyone give any credence to it in a case where she didn’t have anything to do with the interaction?

What about “conservative panic?” Like, if I’m talking to someone who looks like they might be cool only to find out they’re a smug Trump-loving bigot. It’s entirely possible that the discovery of this might make me temporarily insane and my fury may be unleashed.
