The ticket is the gateway to spending a lot more on insurance. Over a lifetime that can add up. It wasn’t just $60, it was avoiding an extra $100-200 for the next decade and, if he does commit an infraction, not having that first ticket as a “pattern.”
They’ve got nothing to lose. Even if the case is dismissed you’re still out the time it takes to go to court. The system may not get your fine money, but the judge/cops/etc all get paid for a normal day’s work.
I’m glad he did it pro bono, because $7500 to go into court and say “you can’t break a law that doesn’t exist” seems a bit steep.
