Yea, it’s not that uncommon for people to want to pay with cash as they go. For some people it’s their method for keeping themselves out of trouble by only drinking until the $20 is gone.
I agree that there are plenty of restaurants here in the US that require a card up front or a deposit, but I’ve usually only seen them at high-end places or busy tourist establishments, and usually when I make a reservation for 10+ people in advance.

Half an hour around anyone with an accent different than mine, and I am talking like them. It’s very embarrassing!
I am only exposed to Brits 40 hours a week and it is incredibly hard to resist some of it rubbing off, *especially* the “DID you?”/“IS it?”/“IS she?”/“IS he?” chirpy auto-response. I can only imagine what it’s like for MM being aroumd them, and only them, 24/7. Give the girl a break!

Look up video on YouTube of John Barrowman on Scottish TV or around his parents. The guy goes into the thickest Scottish accent in either of those situations, whereas he keeps a perfect American accent the rest of the time (he grew up here in IL.) It’s uncanny!
