It kind of plays out like that in soccer; once the ball is sufficiently advanced you’re taking a pretty big risk trying to play for the offsides. The offsides rule ends up constraining play in some aspects, but also results in breakaways that would almost certainly never happen otherwise.

Yep. The offsides rule actually ends up making the game more wide open. Think of it as similar to the over and back rule in basketball, which serves to constrain play such that it’s forced to stay active. No offside rule and there’s too much space on the field. Also some asshole would just stand in front of the goal

I think the defining characteristic is at least one foot has to be in contact at all times, but all I know about race walking I learned from Malcolm in the Middle, so who knows if it’s accurate.

this was worth opening up the replies for.

I mean, I’m definitely glad the wins are coming at a non-fatal rate, but this team has been doing this sort of thing for too many decades for me to not expect it.

Been an Ms fan since I was old enough to know what baseball is (late 1980s); I’ve been assuming that since the middle of my first season of fandom. Very little has changed.

Mariners fan here. Came home sometime around the middle of the 6th, saw a 6-3 scoreline, didn’t bother tuning in because I somehow knew they’d blow it in the bottom of the 9th and didn’t feel like watching it happen yet again. This was fully expected by every Ms fan.

We can only hope

As a Seattleite and long-suffering Sonics fan, watching the franchise struggle and slowly fall apart would bring me more joy than winning the Powerball. I’m not religious, but I pray every day for that sort of thing to happen and that Clay Bennett will lose a Powerball’s worth of money. In conclusion, fuck you, you

I am too literal for the internet. I shall diminish and go into the IRL.

Actually, it probably was intended to mean wine-land, but it refers to the Newfoundland area, not Finland (which is called Finland because of Swedish cultural influence instead of Suomi, the Finnish word for the country).

Mariners fan here. That’s such a painful memory.

This does not happen for me, and I’m on the latest versions of everything.

Hoooooly shit. I figured I’d go see what you are talking about and sweet jesus, that is ridiculous.

Eh, I’d be happy speaking one of the other major languages. Without the US population the number of native english speakers in the world is really, really low.

England: the only mediocre team whose losses seem to surprise people.

Hitting free kicks like that is still an art form that very few players have mastered, and something a player can make a career out of because of its rarity. It’s probably similar to the way baseball fans see robbing home runs (though it definitely happens more often than that) - just because its happening doesn’t

*preamble - this is legit question, not bait, asked curiously, not with desire for internet fighting*

Larry Stone might be good with words, but he’s not good at putting them together in a way that’s reasonable. He’s basically a poor man’s Skip Bayless.
