You do realize that the character has been white since day one. Why should it be a surprise or a disappointment? This isn’t whitewashing. If the character were traditionally Asian, that would be a different story.
I see it differently - I see that they took a boring, overlong, dated-as-hell musical with an interesting premise and made something that looks like an interesting reimagining, with a solid cast.
