No. It’s an employment status, more than anything. A “blue-collar job.” Laborers mainly. Factory workers. Not economic middle class, but rarely going without real necessities either.
I have no doubt whatsoever that she was amazing, because she always is! But I remember almost nothing about that movie. It’s been like twenty years!

I take exception to Winter’s Bone. That’s set in grindingly hungry, filthy, agonizing poverty, not the blue-collar stratum. Some of the characters aspire to be blue-collar; others have simply given up.
I believe this because the converse is observably true: some people go pretty far in show business with very little talent, by dint of having a good personality and being easy to work with. That kind of career also requires a certain amount of luck in personal connections but it can be huge.
It does happen, just not very much.
