It had the unfortunate timing of coming out right next to Lepore's book, but Tim Hanley's Wonder Woman Unbound is another really good look at her history, slightly more focused on the media itself than what was happening behind-the-scenes.

The first arc of New 52 Justice League was very, very, very bad. Remember how bad that was? DC/WB is still so committed to making that story a template for other stuff. It's a very bad idea.

I've watched this movie so many times. My relatives were really obsessed with it? I loved it at the time, in my youth. My only lasting impression of Cellular is that it had a cool Sinnerman remix that it used in a couple action sequences and on the main menu of the DVD.

The Black Widow feature only lasted eight issues (and to be honest the last three aren't as good). Other interesting stuff: the Inhumans stories only lasted two issues after that until it was replaced by an ongoing Beast feature in that same magazine. Beast supported a solo series for a lot longer than you would think.

She goes for extremely cocky guys with deep-seated issues that make them show off*

If you're in 1970, you're just in time to check out Black Widow's first monthly series! She took up half of the Amazing Adventures double feature with the Inhumans. It probably doesn't hold up for anyone that isn't obsessed with the character, but it's interesting, especially in contrast to modern depictions. She

i miss the days when you could make jokes about 10th grade american history without people assuming you were talking about hamilton :(

I'm mixed on this because the Drake feature is kind of weak but it is Structurally Necessary in order for the song to work; you need a break in between all the mumbling, no matter how catchy it may be.

No, it was by Edmondson/Gerads.

Punisher stories can sometimes have Even Worse Racism problems when they end up being about Punisher killing tons and tons of minority criminals.

In the comics, there's really a lot to like about her. The movies play up the karmic guilt/atonement angle, which is definitely there, but her most prominent (and IMHO most interesting) recurring theme has to do with how she outlives the people she holds closest to her, starting with her actual husband, and spiraling

Nah, your argument doesn't stick together. People have been wanting to make a Black Widow movie for a long time, since before Marvel Studios was even a thing. There was a movie that was Going To Be Produced, and then it was canceled because Hollywood got cold feet about female action heroes after the first half of the

It might be just because of how bad I want it to happen, but the whole dynamic with Patsy being jealous of Jessica having the ability to be a hero kind of seemed like the cornerstone of her character throughout the whole show. I think Rachael Taylor said similar stuff in interviews.

The writer who made Patsy a superhero did it as a joke about how much he hated feminist characters! Patsy's costume was originally the costume of The Cat, the first superheroine to get a monthly book named after herself at Marvel Comics, as well a pretty feminist lady in-universe. (The Cat is Greer Grant Nelson, known

1. Where's Sharon Carter in all this? I want to see her :(

Check out Kathryn Immonen's Hellcat if you want: it's pretty fun, too! And, also the new series coming out.

Warren Ellis had a really good spotlight issue on her in Secret Avengers. He recognized Black Widow as a Modesty Blaise reference, and he interrogated her Cold War schtick, and that remembered the point of her codename is that she mourns the people she outlives, and not that she is a humdrum meany killing machine.

Small correction: Rucka didn't write Itsy-Bitsy Spider!

Morgan's problem was moreso the fact that he decided every detail in her history was extremely Sexist and Bad, and then retconned her entire past so that he could make her exactly what he wanted her to be - someone who had a life full of misogyny and abuse and who never made active choices or had control of her own
