I haven't tested this yet because the site is down (I'm calling it the "Link from Lifehacker Effect"), but any alternative to Front Row is okay in my book. Front Row insists that there are no photos in my iPhoto library, one of the many problems that sonuvagun has been causing me. And recently, Front Row stopped

I have to say, I've never used Adium, but I've found that I can get all the iChat fixes and addons that I need with the free extension Chax. Since it's just an extension, you get all the same video and audio chat functionality that you do with iChat (which I use more than I thought I would when purchasing my Macbook).

As RJ pointed out, this discussion has gone on before. I spent quite some time on my comment for that thread, so I'm just going to repost it with some minor changes here.

First of all, let me say that I could never see myself using this program. It seems very much like a time suck hiding in lifehack form, for the reasons detailed above by cv.

The only rating I actually use is 5 Stars. It's not worth thinking hard enough to rate anything else. However, I do make some use of the "using ratings as 'tags'" system. I downloaded one of the South by Southwest Sampler mixes, and it's about a gigabyte of songs no one's ever heard of. I listen to it sometimes when I

Oh, wow! Awesome. I can't wait for the weekend so's I can install the 300 GB hard drive I got and try this out. Thanks so much!

Those abbreviations really are freaking me out. I've got a question that may have been answered in the tutorial but I just want to make sure.

Oh, man! I've been marinating a blog post for around a MONTH about my filing system for photos. I can't get it written because I'm still wrestling with iPhoto. iPhoto has an absolutely stupid way of organizing files. It has two separate folders at the top of its hierarchy: "Modified" and "Original." Under those, it

At first, I thought the main advantage of The Unarchiver would be the ability to automatically delete archives after expanding, but then I found out that I can do that with Stuffit Expander. Plus, I can't figure out how to set The Unarchiver as my default archive expander.

@Katana (and really, most everybody else):

@Michael: I agree with you, but Gina's got a point about convenience — time is money, after all. I spent about an hour or so composing a program in Automator that gets documents, images, and disk images off of my desktop. Useful, yes, but some downsides. For example, I can't have any folders on my desktop (I CAN use

An AskMeFi account...

I have to say, I probably could have gotten by without the WYSIWYG post editing, although it is a nice touch. But the drag-and-drop template customizer is super handy and I've made copious use of it. The one downside to the shift to the new Blogger is that my Blogger Dashboard widget doesn't work anymore... I hope

@Shawn: You know the text that pops up when you hover over a picture? That's alt-text.

I'm with cipherswarm... Apple really limits functionality sometimes by catering to the technologically slower members of the computing world. Not that I really mind; I think that one of the best things about Macs is that they're very easy to get the hang of. I only wish there were some way to customize more.

@Chichi

And yes, an answer between "I couldn't live without them" and "Not over my dead body" would have been handy.

I only use a few widgets, and then only occasionally: Weather, Calculator, Dictionary/Thesaurus, iCal Events, and Unit Converter. None of those take up too much memory, I would venture to guess.

You know, the ideal solution to this would be if Google would finally release that Mac version of Picasa they've supposedly been working on for so long. That's the only program I miss after switching.

A bit unneccessary of me, but... I think the "geo" in geocaching actually comes from "geography," not "geology."
