I'm not that artful either, and honestly, I never bother lining. And red lipstick is what I call "cheating at makeup." I can't do a smoky eye to save my soul, but the red lips plus a wee bit of eyeshadow looks great and requires very little skill.

I had that problem for a while. I've had good success with mixing odd colors of bases in with the lipstick, like yellow plus lipstick or blue plus lipstick, depending on the shade. I took a stage makeup class that made me more confident to experiment.
