This subthread is a reason we need Foxtrot Alpha!
The reality is that the Air Force has two primary missions. The big one is trash hauling - and it is critically important to ALL of the forces. If you need it there ASAP, the Air Force is going to get it there for you. Both of my uncles flew cargo planes, one C-5s his entire career, the other C-141s and C-17s. And I…
Transit buses and school buses are entirely different creatures. With a big, big difference being that school buses are NOT built for the sort of duty cycle expected of transit buses, and they are much, much, much cheaper. They have to be, they spend most of their lives sitting around.
Gosh, to bad there will be no improvements in EV performance over the next 12 years...
No hybrid buses? Give these folks a call (shameless plug): https://www.linkedin.com/company/uniqueelectricsolutionsllc
“I am currently studying EE” - well, I guess that answers that, huh? If Tesla can make a semi that goes 500 miles, the BlueBird can make a school bus that goes that far. It’s a question of cost/benefit, not technical feasibility.
Agreed, how about a truck drivetrain like this? https://www.edisonmotors.ca/
County has to play the rival team from Etna High School in Siskiyou County. The only way to get to Siskiyou is through two routes, both of which are over 230 miles
You can’t find any hybrid buses? Transit companies all over the world are using them, Toronto Transit has several hundred in operation. Can’t be that difficult to paint a few yellow.
Even though many of the rural counties in Northern California are Republican and don’t see eye to eye with Newsom or other state Democrats, this is surprisingly not a political disagreement
Given they spend most of the day parked up, I’d have thought school buses would be the ideal electric conversion. Drive ‘em round their route in the morning, park ‘em on a charger until 2, do the afternoon route, park ‘em up on a charger overnight. They only go slow, so they are not drawing juice being rallyed.
So 99% of the time the Eletric bus is totally fine (once they have a good working version of it), and you keep ICE bus for the football team/others to do those longer trips in. Wow that was an amazingly difficult problem to solve in 3 seconds...
“The first Blue Bird electric bus, which arrived in summer 2020, sometimes sped up too quickly when the motor surged. Other times, it went into “limp mode,” where it crept along but wouldn’t accelerate.”
I’d kill for the Honda E or ID.2 for my daily commuter.
Just a quick reminder that there is no safe exposure level for kids being exposed to diesel exhaust. Respiratory issues and cancer are linked to exposure to diesel exhaust.
I was assuming there would be a slide or at least a note:
Series hybrid is really the answer, maybe even propane since they already offer that option. 100 mile electric range with a range extender for edge uses, and can still charge up fully overnight for 14 hours.
This is the kind of application where hydrogen is likely a better alternative, if zero emissions from the vehicle is the goal.
Compromise: Series hybrid diesel electric bus...... Going full electric isnt really there yet for many applications it seems so why not compromise
