The issue is the extraction of said materials from various points in the earth and converting them to an atmospheric gas.

Properly designed mass transit systems don’t have people walking long distances to a transit hub.  Walking a block to two to a location where a bus arrives every 10-15 minutes is not that big of a burden.

But it’s not like those pipelines became useless because gas lighting became obsolete.  Stoves, furances, water heaters, etc.  The issue is people don’t want to pay to keep those lines maintained.
