The only harem-esque show I watched in 2019 was The Quintessential Quintuplets which was mildly diverting fun. I’m probably even less likely to watch harem shows than Isekai as I am also sick of the overdone tropes you mentioned. I was sick of those tropes with the original Tenchi Muyo though. I heard the ending of We Read more

Kaguya-sama manga vol 12 just popped through my letterbox today... The manga is excellent, though I thought the way the anime brought it to life made it even better than the original source material

I’m not sure I want to devote enough time to read 28 volumes of something when I couldn’t stand the first episode of the anime. Is it available legally outside of Japan?

But... but... This is a *family* site. I can’t possibly recommend such... debauchery. (I get where you are coming from and realise that for most folks in many countries, piracy may be their only viable option. I was deliberately trying to stick to legal options where possible though...)

I guess Japanese voice actors in such productions as these tend towards a higher pitch that put my teeth on edge and make my tympanic membranes bleed. You’re right though, both Japanese and English language voice casts make a sterling effort and rescue a show that could have been utterly abysmal without their vocal Read more

I’ll invert this by suggesting the worst possible examples: any scene where the pretty and vulnerable female schoolgirl character is mysteriously incapacitated by “non-specific anime fever” and the blushing male protagonist somehow has to insert into her a rectal suppository of fever medication. Hey Luigi, I always assumed you’d been here so much longer than me as you already seemed like a piece of the furniture (a very unusual, human-shaped piece of furniture) when I arrived a few months after you in February of this year. So far I have very much enjoyed our interactions, I just wish I had more time in my Read more

You must be one of the lucky few. I have lightning-fast fibre broadband and Funimation’s service sucks ass. Every other streaming service works perfectly.

Funimation is an utter garbage service, a total embarrassment. Its PS4 app has been broken for years now. It never works for me. The iPad app is trash, constantly stops in the middle of an episode and restarts again from the beginning. Their PC access isn’t much better. I’m not bothering with anything on Funimation Read more

The fan service in Fire Force really bugs me because of the tonal whiplash - it happens in the middle of otherwise serious scenes and robs them of urgency and meaning. It is incredibly demeaning to the female characters, and is just not funny. I do generally find fan-service annoying, but I can handle it to a certain Read more

The eyeless faces thing bugs me too! It looks so dumb. Maybe they’ll tidy it up for the eventual blu-rays that apparently no-one wants to buy.

Isekai: The “transported to another world” genre - usually the protagonist dies and is reincarnated in another world or is spirited away from his home by a magical book or something. They usually come from our world and their knowledge is an advantage in whatever generic mediaeval society they find themselves in, or Read more

I don’t hate isekais, I’m just tired of the genre. I’m still really looking forward to Re:Zero season 2, as the first season was one of my favourite anime ever. I’ll probably wait until I recover from isekai-fatigue so I can give Cautious Hero a fair chance sometime in the future.

Hmmm. That does seem quite a similar premise to Dr Stone (which I suppose you could argue is also an isekai show). But “not that bad for an isekai” isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement! Earlier in the year I’d probably have given it a shot, but Slime and Shield Hero have left me all isekai-d out.
