I know nothing about cars and even less about the companies that make them, but even with that lack of knowledge I was still able to understand what you were aiming for here. Well done for that effort in clarity for the benefit of non gear-heads like me. Read more

Yeah, I read Riquinni’s role that way now too, after reading some similar takes on the scene elsewhere. Even with that subtext, it’s poorly handled.

Great review, Proton. I came to Babymetal reasonably recently, a few months prior to the release of their latest album. I’ll never forget the look on my son’s face when he asked what I was listening to and I handed him my headphones. My kids already thought I was weird, but now they know I listen to Squeaky Japanese Read more

Kaguya-sama is also my current favourite manga. It is clever, witty, heartfelt and funny. I look forwards to every volume release in English. Curse you for your understanding of Japanese and access to newer volumes! Also great article with very well considered thoughts.

I’ve been meaning to look Otaku no Video out for years. I remember seeing the VHS on the shelf at HMV in the 90s, but I didn’t have enough money to buy it and I don’t think it ever came out on disc here. I’m sure there are other means...

I’d say I definitely “get” this film more as an adult than I did as a teenager, but that one scene does spoil it a great deal. Even when it is removed, the film makes less sense as a result. Apart from that, it’s very worthwhile.

You know, I’ve never seen them but I discovered today that they are available to watch on YouTube. I’ll have a look at them when I get a spare few minutes. I have heard they are something special.

Perhaps it was just in the UK so that it could reach a wider audience. The BBFC has a lot of clout here, and ratings have more legal weight in the UK than in the US, though you could argue the BBFC’s stance has softened on many things with time. The 2015 uncut dvd/blu-ray release is still rated 15 here though, whereas Read more

As much as I also love the old things, the advent of digital 2D animation has allowed anime to explode in volume with greatly reduced production costs and faster turnover times. In some ways this is bad in that it contributes to a tsunami of content and overwork of animation staff, but it has helped anime to Read more

I’m very happy that this is cheap and easy to pick up now. Gainax made a habit later on of avoiding easy closure on their stories. I’m still unsure if this is deliberate or they just don’t know how to end stories satisfyingly. Gurran Lagann mostly excepted, it has an awesome ending, apart from I don’t like the Read more

I’ve still got a heap of them in a box in my attic. No VHS player for them though...

You’re right, I should probably have qualified that statement with “compared to many modern horrifically bug-eyed anime character designs with orbital volumes the size of soccer balls”.

I know this article doesn’t look too spoiler-heavy, but I’ll save this to read once I’ve gotten round to watching the show. I picked up the blu-ray cheap recently, this show’s been on my radar for a while. I liked Trigun and Gungrave, both from the same author/artist so you’ve just given me an excuse to move it up Read more

I absolutely loved this game, even from the beginning. I loved the eerie feeling of loneliness that it conjured, wandering empty planets and occasionally bumping into weird aliens who spoke in gibberish. Now it’s very different and they’ve added so much *stuff*. It’s definitely improved, but that lonely feeling has Read more

Yeah! That guy who got frozen internally and externally at the end should have been liquidised mush after he defrosted, not alive and mobile enough to be led away in handcuffs (it was shown in passing that he survived). Todoroki definitely attempted murder there. Unless the guy had an extra, unmentioned “survive Read more
