This gets to an idea I was thinking while reading this article. The new Star Wars trilogy and the 2016 Ghostbusters both got heavy marketing and praise on the “This is for fans who aren’t like those OTHER fans” mindset, based on the idea that pandering to female fans or fans of color with what turned out to be

The real world is full of mythology, ghost stories, and urban legends, and the animated series had the ghostbusters encountering everything from vampires, trolls, demons, the boogieman, Cthulhu etc.

And the thing about fan service is, it does the opposite in the long run. It’s just catering to existing fans, but not creating new ones. I doubt any younger people who didn’t grow up with the Ghostbusters will see this film and think, “Yes, this is the franchise for me!” It will just seem weird and inscrutable, full

Snatch is my Guy Ritchie pick. It’s a guilty pleasure favorite. Dennis Farina in particular cracks me up. “Anything to declare?” “Yeah, don’t go to England.”

With A Bridge Too Far (how has nobody mentioned A Bridge Too Far!?)

Pacino and DeNiro head to head. Throw in Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Danny Trejo, Jon Voight, Ashely Judd on the cusp of bigger stardom, and more for good measure. Heat. Personal all time fave.

Rock n Rolla, Contagion, Silverado...

I will throw in my vote here for one of my all-time favorites: Silverado. Kevins Kline and Costner, Danny Glover, Brian Dennehy, Jeff Goldblum, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Hunt, John Cleese (of all people), the list just goes on and on. Everyone turns in a magnificent performance and it is SO MUCH FUN!

Well, Tom Hanks plays him! Maybe a shot of his Tom Hanks face would help.

It was a “scary gross” and damn right it was cool. As often as I’ve seen this movie, for years as a kid I still used to cover my eyes at certain parts like the Library Ghost. The hellhound in Luis’ closet made my palms sweat, too. There’s imagery in this film that is legitimate horror.

Man, sometimes you really can tell the comics stories are just the writers working through their own neuroses, traumas and hang ups.

Look, if you can’t keep up with snarky, dismissive hipster lingo, you’re clearly part of the problem.

I feel like I want to watch a movie now called “Mary Jane and Me”. That basically follow Mary Jane from stupid “but I’m a part-time actor” jobs and auditions. With every now and then, her boyfriends pops in through a window and says “hi” in costume.

It’d be a short movie, you really only need to know two things. One is he’s the King, second is LOOK OUT MAN! He knows a little thing called ka-ra-tey.

(you never need a reason for this)

For the love of God, someone please cancel me.  I’ve been unemployed for two years.

I think it’s a good point that the people watching this are already likely to agree with the creatives’ POVs; its the same issue that plagues The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight, etc. They are preaching to the choir. A lot of successful horror/sci-fi crosses political lines and asks you to think about what is presented.

Speaking of Nextwave, in 2019 it was apparently retconned that the Post-Nextwave Machine Man and Pre-Nextwave Machine Man are two completely different characters in Marvel #1001 with Pre-Nextwave Machine Man returning to Earth after being with the Celestials

It’s possible for LOTR to have successfully accomplished what Tolkien was trying to do while still being a slog for some readers. Tolkien had a particular set of interests that he focused on while building his world — language, certain mythical aspects — to the near total exclusion of others — politics, economics,
