Since Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance is Bujold's first novel centered on Ivan Vorpatril rather than Miles Vorkosigan, I think you can enjoy it as a standalone. Ivan's always been one of my favorite supporting characters in this series, and it's a treat to get a whole book about him.
