People spend 8 hours a day minimum *working*. That doesn’t account for the time it takes to get to/from work (where more often than not they’re sitting while driving, or sitting on mass transit). The average commute time in the US is 25 minutes each way. Yet many still find time to exercise/work out each week. So now…

I wonder if things have changed. Back when I was in school for Engineering there were very few females (I think there were maybe 6 in my graduating class) but the reason was always that females in general just didn’t *want* to go into Engineering. It was never a question of affording it.

I think you’d start to feel the pressure when your student loan debt comes calling. Loans for a PhD you’d be throwing into the trash can. Unless someone else paid for it, then they’d feel a bit of resentment towards you.

I’m guessing you don’t travel much. 8 hours can get you across the country by flight, including time in security. 8 hours in a car, and you might get across a state or two. Maybe a few more in New England. Not even one in the larger states.
