I haven't played the original either, but I read the previous article about how you join matching numbers together. If you look up a video or that article and watch the gameplay, it will start to make sense.

Just play the other linked version, with the numbers. Much better.

This is the best flappy clone I've played yet (which probably isn't saying much, but still). It's got a fun aesthetic, evolves the further you get, and offers a nice risk/reward with the power pellets.
