I think it was meant to show his awareness that she really runs Hilltop now, his desire to stand up for himself, his cowardice and provide context to him running off to Simon/Negan..

It wasn't Rick telling Daryl to get on his knees as much as it was the writers telling the audience to get on our knees….

Her making that conscious choice is sort of important in terms of defining the show… and having the show runners "break the 4th wall" just makes it easier to write the show. Whether the robots really have free will or if they are ultimately controlled is sort of important.

I am not sure what to make of this episode…. it felt really out of of sorts as a schizophrenic episode where both nothing happened and huge amounts happened….. I was struggling to enjoy it until we saw the Ambassador story which made it fit together….
