The quality of Kubo unfortunatley doesn't matter, the voting pannel for the oscars have straight up admitted they don't watch the animated movies cause 'eww animation' and just vote for whatever the fuck got advertised the most.

It helps that their CEO is independently mega rich and doesn't really give a fuck about making a profit and just wants to make beautiful stop motion.

Laika use CG like a live action movie, basically shoot as much as they can in stop motion, then do like digital set extensions, remove wires and cables and all that shit in CG.
