Indeed. I could certainly do a list of white actors getting life time achievement awards. Ironically, at the top of that list is Pacino in Scent of a Woman who beat out Denzel for Malcolm X.

We seem to be in a disagreement.
I love Denzel, and think he probably deserves more awards than he has, but…. just not that one.

Are you saying that God could be played by a white man?

*black swan power salute*

Also, the fact that she mentions Vivica A. Fox as one of her contemporaries also suggests that there had be a dearth of black actresses in her generation.

Good job. I had to explain to my Aunt at Thanksgiving why "the blacks" hits the ear wrong, and probably should be removed from her lexicon.

To be fair I haven't eaten at a Red Lobster in probably 10 years.

1. The race of his character in Training Day is arguably important to that role.
2. Training Day was a lifetime achievement award for Denzel

Do you know what happens to an Oscar when it is struck by lightening? The same thing that happens to any other trophy.

i'll also make the unpopular observation that Lupito Nyong'o probably was gifted her Oscar because of the need to recognize someone from that film. I really enjoyed Nyong'o in 12 Years a Slave, but that movie was so well acted across the board that I really didn't see Nyong'o as much of a standout as Adepero Oduye,

and starring Julian Edelman as Rod Tidwell.

numbers also have to be adjusted for the Will Smith effect. He lost twice to black actors. Doesn't that skew the numbers when there are multiple people of color in the same year?

That Halle Berry won for Monster's Ball?

yes, but the point is Denzel was nominated for that film and not for Man on Fire, Crimson Tide, Philadelphia, or something where he just happens to be black.

Isn't it 5 per category? At least in recent years it is.

I think your math is wrong because they use the wrong term. It isn't 352 nominations. It is 352 Oscars won. Nominations with be 5 times more than that… maybe.

The point is Denzel got nominated/won for a role about race and not for some other films where he was just phenomenal otherwise.

Indeed. Denzel is a great actor, but unless his blackness is central to the role (Flight excluded) he gets ignored. In my opinion Denzel and Hanks probably should get the Meryl Streep treatment where they get nominated almost any year they have a film out, but don't for different reasons.

Funny thing is Denzel got his lead actor for the wrong film and Halle Berry got one for fucking Billy Bob Thorton and being in a particularly weak year.

I've started catching matinees by myself. Already have my next one planned for when Deadpool comes out.
