The first half of Compton is fire, in a good way. It does the "behind the music" dynamic better than so many music biopics. But the second half does feel compromised — more the result of extensive contract negotiation about whose side gets told in what way than a fully felt story. But man, the first half is pretty…
That is a really good point. And for sure, the most interesting thing about the movie is the existence of these women that I hadn't heard of before, either. The movie itself is not especially inspired but I imagine it will be a net good that it's out there.
I mean, it's fine on that level. It's perfectly watchable. It operates a little like a family film, where I think probably older kids watching it might enjoy it and learn something, but it's hard for me to blanket recommend it.
Get off the internet, where maybe you can meet some real-life hatemongers and bigots! ;)
Hey, I tried to throw you guys a bone with a Trek Run the Series! :)
To say nothing of the tireless work Kevin Costner did solving racism in Black and White
Oh man, Marcia Gay Harden is so bad in Mystic River that it took me years to accept her as a good actor in general (she's quite wonderful in Whip It).
I would be so into that but, alas.
That's an interesting point. My feeling is that, you know, generally actors are pretty good. I mean, obviously not all actors are created equal, but there are a lot of good actors out there who can turn in good performances. The other stuff can be a lot harder — or maybe I'm less forgiving of it because their faces…
How can someone be wrong about their own opinion?
And I should make clear, there isn't a TON of "but here are good white people!" in this movie. I love that the three leads are all black women, rather than the black woman and then the three good white people. But I do get tired of seeing Costner as the Honorable White Male, and yeah, Selma and Straight Outta Compton…
I'm surprised there are any effigies left after my Star Wars prequels essay!
I guess I shouldn't; it's just kind of galling to me. But I guess I can console myself picturing your house getting robbed and no one believing it happened because it wasn't on video.
Yesssss. The Trust was rad, especially compared to most of his other DTV thrillers.
They're not great but I find them pretty enjoyable on the balance — though I've never played the games, so that contributes to pretty low expectations on my end.
It's hard for me to picture Assassin's Creed ever looking that way, but hey, what do I know.
I know you're one of those dudes who doesn't really see movies and also thinks most of the movies he doesn't see must be crap, but that's no excuse for not being able to count properly.
Yeah, and it's pretty embarrassing that I didn't further explain my criticism by noting that this is a particularly uninteresting white male filmmaker, and imply that this might be why the movie isn't particularly interesting.
Just trying is the difference between a C+ and the actual grade the CG animal karaoke movie got, which was C-. For whatever that's worth.
