I do think there's an interesting post-apocalypse story out there about the process of rebuilding, having to reinvent what civilization is in a harsh world that's a mix of dark ages and lingering modernity. Stuff like experimenting with government and how they're going to trade and doling out the work, etc. while

I feel like if I worked with someone for three years then I could remain friends with them afterwards. If I worked with someone ten years then I'd probably completely despise them forevermore.

If I remember right that's about how Obama was treated as well. Lukewarm at best by the people who should have been championing the first black president, ugly barely concealed racism from the other side.

You don't understand what made Mad Men compelling if you only watched the first four episodes. The first season is pretty flat compared to what's to come. Skip ahead to season 3 or 4. Season 5 is when the show gets insanely good and stays that way until the end.

Why is that different than just about every superhero comic book? They rarely have long term plans either and if successful, just keep running forever.

This show is kind of paced like an MMORPG. Adventuring parties, characters coming and going, lots of pointless quests, no real purpose or greater narratives.
