I feel those positive qualities are more Avery and Gaiman's fault. Zemeckis even admitted he didn't understand the original poem and some of the script.
I always tend to blame Roger Rabbit on Spielberg whose work as a producer on the film was perfect. My Zemeckis film of choice is Used Cars.
Beowulf is a great film looking for a director who understands the script.
This and its director aren't really mumblecore except under the broadest definition. For example all of his films have been shot on film while mumblecore is generally DV.
AT does story arcs for an older (10-13) age base so that comparison isn't quite right. Maybe that new Teen Titans show is a better point of comparison, though this is all irrelevant because they have reviewed this show before.
