Haven't watched this in a long time but I recall thinking its 'fun' reputation far exceeded its actual content. Sure, it's fine as it goes but I still find it hard to buy into 90s action movie nostalgia that's so prevalent on the net these days, even though I'm of an age that should buy into it completely.

I thought the first season was a really mixed bag - some great performances hampered by humor that wasn't nearly as darkly funny as it obviously thought it was (and the less said about the mid-season lull the better). But the reviews for season 2 have been too good for me to ignore, and I'll give it a go soon.

The mythology episodes tend to hold up terribly on rewatch though, because you know what a complete mess it'll become. Probably why I haven't bothered revisiting Lost either, come to think of it.

The editing is so goddamn fast, like it doesn't trust the audience to maintain focus if it stays on a shot for more than 2 seconds. It's really obnoxious and completely out of keeping with the previous run.

It's definitely underrated. I think its remake status is why it doesn't get its due, but working within that confine sort of forces Nolan to keep himself on a leash and just tell a satisfyingly straight story.

Well, that's why I made sure to say 'most of the time'. He got deserved flack for his last two movies partly because the third act twists finally felt artificial and unearned.

Agreed. I get that he enjoys having the keys the Warner Brothers' money vault, but I think he could do with making another mid-level film to keep him on his toes after TDKR and Interstellar. Perhaps a black comedy?

One thing the article could have pointed out is that there are almost no establishing shots in the movie. Makes things really disorientating.

I got over the sci-fi aspect of the Prestige when I found out that Tesla did indeed invent a lot of machines which never saw the light of day. Suddenly the 'what if' scenarios seemed really enjoyable in the context of the film.

Nolan seems to be a Rorschach test for how people feel about what cinema 'should' be. I can't remember a director who's provoked so many diametrically opposing views.

The Prestige is probably my favorite film of his, if only for the fever dream atmosphere. I'm still amazed at how many people thought the twist was some kind of cop-out, as if that wasn't the entire point. They wanted to be fooled.
