There are barely any characters whose motivations are almost entirely "male" or "female" such that a flipped gender would really seem ill-fitting. And that's especially so for original characters, who aren't beholden to prior depictions in comics, novels or TV…

I kind of doubt that's the only issue and if she had said Spielberg mostly casts men as his leads, everyone would be cool with it. Even a brief scan of these comments shows that it's not just a matter of forgetting The Color Purple.
