I liked Anne Rice's version in "Memnoch The Devil". It's been a long while since I read it, but he was alternately menacing, sympathetic and manipulative and told an interesting alternate story of his origin and motives.

This and Midnite Vultures, since they were recorded at the same time. Some of the songs on Midnite would be right at home on Mutations and vice versa. Such a versatile group of musicians.

They were essentially the same body. Hearse gets the vinyl top and landeau irons and painted black, ambulance gets the light and siren and painted white.Everybody wins. Ecto-1 was an ambulance.

It's that understated quality that makes it so good, gives the music and production room to breathe. It seems sparse, but its packed with so much instrumentation and subtle details that it takes many many listens to catch it all.

there's a simple solution to that, just play it loud.

It was recorded in the same sessions as Midnite Vultures, so that's probably why the fun Beck bleeds through.
