AVC is further left than Salon/Vox/MSNBC? WTF are you on about?

This is a site that asked "Is Ke$ha the nadir of contemporary pop?" (article appears to have been removed, it appeared in 2010).

I'm not seeing the liberal/progressive distinction, at least not as its widely recognized. Where do you see liberals saying they only want white/Christian views? Who are these people?

He made no good points.

"Maher never tied his atheism to any meaningful cause"

And this writer has the gall to call Maher out for being a "white man".

AV Club can't stop with the "white people, amirite?" thing. It's very tiresome.

This is the problem, conservatives are smearing and just outright trying to ban Muslims from the country while Maher is saying, reasonably, that there needs to be a space for moderates and a push for women's rights in the Muslim world. But folks act like Maher is making the same blind criticism as Trump and his ilk,

That "every bit of fear" line was NOT a quote from Maher, he never said that. That line was the writer's incorrect interpretation of Maher's beliefs. Notice how the writer of this article *didn't* actually quote Maher on Islam? It's because Maher is more nuanced than that quote you posted.

This article is a real low-point for AVC. You could totally write a thoughtful critique of Maher's show, but this wasn't it. This essay was shallow and didn't make a convincing case that Maher is irrelevant or bigoted.
And AVC becoming a more general site with more political content (even if it is tied to pop culture,

Which, by the way, is the same thing as calling Obama "obummer" of whatever.
The Oliver "Drumpf" thing was really egregious because you know liberals don't like it when people don't use a person's preferred name/pronoun, but if Trump's family changed their name that's for some reason a valid criticism of the man?
Like,

"He doesn't distinguish between the most abusive aspects of some parts of Islam and anyone who self identifies as a Muslim. "

Very well put.

I don't know, is the transgender locker room/bathroom issue totally shored up and everyone on the left is in perfect agreement? I think there are liberals who respect transgender rights but think the bathroom/shower aspect is new territory. Milo's shtick about transgender people having higher instances of sexual

Spot on, this was a terrible essay and the most recent episode has essentially proven Maher's relevance. And let's be real, a lot of people who watch John Oliver only know of conservatives what they hear Oliver paraphrase. Maher at least has actual conservatives on and lets them speak and gives them the time of day.

I disagree. Even if you're an atheist, you don't necessarily have to view religion as "the enemy". Religion, as it's practiced by many moderates, can be a fine thing, also a very personal thing. It's when religious people try to legislate based on their religion (or use religion as a way to achieve political ends)

You are correct, liberals feel very comfortable criticizing Christianity and the Catholic church (rightly so in most cases), but shy away from making the same criticisms of other religions and it's often because conservatives are already smearing these organizations, so a liberal criticism gets associated with the

Maybe if you're just looking at cable news personalities.

Thank you, this writer acts like Affleck made a great counter-argument, which he didn't.

Maher hasn't said we should invade/occupy, that's a misrepresentation.
