Agreed completely. It made more sense to me, especially given the story point of having his grandchildren visit. Each time I watch the movie, I feel this true, deep sadness at the end when they're fleeing and he turns one last time towards the park with a heartbroken look on his face.

That opening was just one of the coolest things I've ever seen. The angle, the reveal that it is in fact a two headed mutant gecko, him stomping on it without looking…and the raiders' cars coming flying into frame.
