We’re in a similar situation. Just bought a house that happened to be in an HOA. We weren’t actively seeking an HOA and it indeed was a drawback for me, but if we wanted anything close to new (it was built in 2011) and move-in ready it was either an HOA or a house that was built in the 1950s in need of work.
