You should re-wire the switch in parallel to the thermostat as an override for ON instead of bypassing it. That lets you turn the fans on at low speeds when the car would otherwise have them off, but also still function when the car is smarter than you.

I think I agree with the sentiment, but not with the decade. 90's is pre CAN bus, which may make it easier to replace individual subsystems, and keep costs of those replacements down, but it leads to a MUCH more complicated car.
