Not confusing, just bad, very bad writing. Adding Cloverfield name and the franken-scenes to it was just glow-in-the-dark glitter lipstick on the proverbial pig. And in the process cheapened the Cloverfield name and concept as a series of movies whose connection is not overtly stated.
