Tony Blair got re-elected twice doing that. The political landscape in the US (and the UK too) has shifted way to the right, possibly because it's so heavily dependent on funding now. The people who "put Obama there" are the millionaires and billionaires who funded his last campaign and are funding this one too.

And not all of the ones who are covered by it follow it.

My mum reckons (highly authoritative way to start a comment, I know) that abusers deliberately sought to be priests because it was such a powerful position in Catholic communities.

Hyperbole. I am aware there are still people who wish to be priests but their dwindling numbers are a widely recognised problem for the Church:

It's cool, I was pretty sure we were in agreement, I think I was just being pedantic about choice of phrase.

The video's done by this odd Taiwanese news company that does CGI animations to accompany news stories. They did a few that became well-known-ish a while ago because the animations were so bizarre.

Indeed. They aren't that fussed about it either. The Catholic Church tried to coax Anglican priests over to it when the CoE started ordaining women and said that it didn't matter if they were already married. Naked grab for power and an attempt to bolster the ranks of their priesthood because, oddly enough, nobody

Or people who believe the above have convinced them it's the right thing to do for some other reason. Not everyone who does it is a sociopath or that would leave very few Egyptians as non-sociopathic.

We can tell them whatever we like but they have every right to ignore us. Gail Dines is entitled to her opinion on the merits of porn. If you don't like it and disagree, say so. Don't assume she just thinks your preferences are icky. Or that it is actually possible for someone else to believe certain actions a woman

Yeah, I agree, I just wanted to make clear that I thought that was an issue of his perceptions of their money rather than anything else. Men's rights activists would argue (if their roles were reversed) that the money belonged only to the breadwinner and ignore the contributions that the non-bread winner made in

...Nooo, that's not quite what I was getting at. What I meant was that she was assuming a whole bunch of things about the people who are apparently made uncomfortable by her (or someone else's) sexual behaviour. I don't really see how basically accusing someone else of being a prude for having a different opinion on

Do you also love it when people assume they can read your thoughts, intentions and feelings?

I agree. Gail Dines seems to be completely ignoring the role of men and acting as if all porn is always about male consumers viewing women having sex. What if a woman's watching porn where a guy is submissive to a woman? How is that degrading to women?

Because any man interested in the sociology of gender must have mommy issues. Duh.

Probably not if any of the female contestants were white.

When he perceived it wasn't his own. I'd say it was their jointly owned money in this situation, just as if the man was the primary breadwinner. I'm not saying that you've changed your wording due to this, but the particular choice of language is reminiscent of people who complain when women get divorce payouts,

Agreed. And well said.

I'm (loosely) in favour of having the House of Lords (an unelected, archaic relic of an institution in GB&NI) replaced by sortition. It's no less shit an idea than a bunch of people selected by the present government, plus some hereditary peers and bishops.

Beat me to it. Only I would've put "natural" in quote marks because no agriculture can really be considered to be natural. And I'm a pedant.
