I don't think even Pence is this upset about it.

I can't deny that the real answer probably lies in building enough support and numbers to turn things around. But that's politically. If we're still going to completely shut out and shut down people who don't agree with us on a personal level, it furthers the societal divide that bleeds into and feeds off of politics.

I don't think he could have accomplished much more against a Congress that was dead-set against letting him or the Democrats have any "victories." Pushing headstrong along without compromise is going to get us nowhere, unless the numbers are really on our side.

While I feel everyone should place equality high up their list of priorities, some voters make their decisions based on issues that immediately effect them - economy, fear of government, whatever. Not everyone has the comfort to be so magnanimous.

No doubt that a vote for Trump supported a candidate spouting racist things, but people are guided by different reasons. Just saying "Fuck 'em" continues the divisiveness that's made us unable to get anything done in this country and led to the "Us vs. Them" mentality. Liberals should absolutely organize around

Awwww. Lol

I hope it'll improve with time. I don't think Trevor is doing anything wronh aside from not being Jon Stewart.

And that is a huge f'ing riddle!

And sunk just as hard!

That's about half the country. What are we to do? Chastise them constantly and drive them further away? I think the answer is to address the primary reasons people voted the way they did, which I believe are mostly economic.

The blanket "A Trump vote means you're a racist" statement means about half the country are racists. Not only is it untrue, but it doesn't really help anything other than channeling the anger and disappointment so many of us feel.

People are complicated, and often vote for their own interests first, especially when they're economic. Selfish might be a more applicable label than calling everyone racist.

As you said, racism plays a part but is not the only reason. But it's a common argument that racism is THE reason and everyone who voted for Trump is a shameful, awful person. As you said, this is reductionist and not at all helpful. But I think it reflects a simplistic intolerance I've seen before in conversations

I still wonder how much of an impact Comey's letter had on voters.

Yes. Honestly, politics is more like religion now for many. It's about general faith in your viewpoint and ignoring the facts that don't fit.

Agreed. It's in part a product of the value placed on celebrity.

He's on TV!

They voted for this indistinct but cozy version of America that doesn't need to be supported with facts. Rousing catchphrases are all you need.

And so we've turned on Jon Stewart.

The Democrats failed to connect with the huge swathes of rural America that turned out for Trump. But they also lost ground among minorities, so something was wrong with the campaign.
