I think people, including me and likely Natalie Portman herself, thought it was disappointing that Jane was given so little of substance to do in the first Thor movies. I think giving the actress the opportunity to play a superhero, and not just the girlfriend of a superhero, should really let her shine.

You’re absolutely correct. I09's and especially AV Club’s take was so aggressively partisan that it certainly didn’t help the atmosphere back then.

See, I think it’s weird because ‘let the past die’ is a fundamental misreading of the movie’s message.  Kylo is the antagonist, for chrissake.

The biggest joke is that TLJ, for all it’s supposed subversion and deconstruction, just retreaded the same plucky Rebels vs Evil Empire and Good Force user vs Evil Force user storyline. It really did not add anything of substance and is just a lot of navel gazing.
