If you want to be a strong general purpose programmer with no specific interest (ie iPhone programming), I would recommend the following 4: Python, Java/C# (I prefer C# because .NET), C/C++, and Intel 8086 ASM.

Your knowledge of libraries and SDKs isn’t going to be sufficient to be a general purpose programmer, but your general understanding will likely be exceptional (if you are good at your job).

That story had a very “this is horrible but that reminds me of the time. . .” start to it.
